Clay Model of Ace’s head

Sometimes I just have to break out the Sculpey and model something with my hands. It helps me think. In this case, I’m thinking about Ace and what makes him tick. This is also for use as a drawing aid. I hope to make the time to model his whole body at some point, then pour some resin casts. Ace bobble heads anyone?

Ah… much better. he needed more chin action.

Cool! Do you ever bake those sorts of models and paint them?

I like the juxtaposition of his grin and space-time-worn eyes. Ace has been through a lot of sh**, pun intended. Has history. But he keeps on going. That’s what I take from his appearance, anyhow.

I’d be in for an Ace bobble head. The sculpt looks awesome.

Maybe we should have an Ace Sculpture contest heh? (Read: Mark’s lazy way of getting someone else to sculpt Ace’s body.)

Very cool Mark. What sort of tools do you use to work on such a small scale?

I’m all for Ace bobbleheads, and, as I mentioned before: Rooter bobble heads would be frick’n awesome as well. 😀

    Hmm, surprising…

When I look closely at Ace’s drawn face, I see a toothpick in his mouth…
But when I look closely at Ace’s sculpted face, I see none…

Now, I of course could be mistaken but, would that have anything to do with this laziness you’re talking about, Mark? … Nah, probably not, I’m just making things, ain’t I?

How timely. I’ve been researching stop motion as my son wants to try some claymation after seeing ParaNorman. hopefully he won’t get bored at 12-24 frames per sec… 🙂

I too see a missing toothpick. And I think I would only be interested in an Ace bobble head if there was a rooter one to go with it….or just rooter. Gotta love rooter 😉

P.S. Love seeing the work being done on this. The wheels are turning!

Swoo703- What are you talking about?. the toothpick is right there in plain site. It’s one of my favorite sculpting tools. heh, heh!

DonC- Claymation has come along what hasn’t it? ParaNorman looks Awesome. Incidentally, my son Justin has become acquainted with Will Vinton’s son. they are both attending film classes at UofO (GO DUCKS!) Justin knew nothing about who Will Vinton was. Haha! I had to educate the young man.

Warren P- My only tools are what you see in the photos: a dental tool and a toothpick (and my pudgy fingers).

Smart enough, Mark. But I tell you, I left this way out intentionally for you to dash into, just to feel I have the control of your soul. I mean, really!

For instance, if I say “Get back to work instead of loosing your time answering your fans’ stupid comments!”, I’m pretty sure you will *click* … do … *click, click, click* … ? dammit, what the… *CLANK!*

Oh oh… Broken. Yet, the seller told me that it should not… Ach, this damn Satan! I should never have trusted this guy! What a stupid name is that, anyway?

… Oh well, take it back, Mark, it’s your soul. I’ve got enough to do with mine, anyway… Hope you will make something of it but let me wish you good luck, I can sense you’ll need some… And patience, too!

    No hard feelings, eh?

Mark, (re: Will Vinton) That is awesome! My son is only 9, but he’s artistically gifted so I want him more involved. I asked him to create an original character for our animation, and he drew a combination of Jack Skellington and the Hatbox Ghost (Disney Haunted Mansion); his favorite characters.

Creative indeed, but I may need to educate him on copyright law. LOL

Yeah, it’s certainly a good time to be a stop-motion fan. Where’s Stacy Davidson, on this comment thread, anyway? 🙂

    Also… CHIN == COWBELL

You know, the more I look at Ace (in his painting), and that partially smirkish squint, with the eyebrow raised, (and the toothpick); the more I think of George Dubya, only I imagine him chewing on some long grass instead.

Wow that 3rd picture reminds me alot of the “eastern island heads”. google that and you will see the design is pretty similar!

“Moai human figures carved from rock on the Chilean Polynesian island of Easter Island between the years 1250 and 1500”

If you made Ace into a 3D model, you could send him over to Shapeways and then make anyone who wanted a figurine. Regardless of minimum production numbers. 😉
