Character development

The following images give some idea of the evolution of a character concept. Artist Brent Forrest provided a couple different takes for a character called Nurbs, who is one of Ace’s pals in the story. I did a quick clay sculpt of my interpretation and Brent refined the character further based on the sculpt. Coming up with crazy alien characters is one of the most fun parts for me and it’s been a blast working closely with such a talented character artist as Brent.

Nice. And a resemblance to Watto (had to look up his name) from phantom menace. Is this pseudo parody, or did your design just develop organically?

I was going to say the same thing. The first thing I thought of when seeing that was Star Wars.

Just awesome! Now we’re striking the right space opera chords.

Ha! We tried to steer clear of Watto territory but hard to do when you put an elephant-like trunk on any character.

    3d modeling in joke? 😉

I always thought of Watto as more of a flying aardvark – but yeah the snout and bulbous eyes are in the same ballpark

I think the design is far enough away to be its own thing. I think it’s great! So cool to see the clay sculpture!

Interestingly enough, everyone else thought “Watto!” where I initially thought, “say, that looks like those trunked camel things that replaced the banthas in Episode I”

You know, the ones that gas at Jar Jar before he says, “Peeee Yussa!!!”

So, everyone can’t get their heads out of the Star Wars clouds. Meanwhile, I’m the only one thinking, “That looks like Beek Nariz from Under A Killing Moon if the color palette got messed up.”

    I like things with trunks.

Also, the less we talk about Episode I, the more awesome SpaceVenture will be.

In fact, everyone who mentions Watto or anything Jar Jar has ever said is responsible for one (1) cool thing that gets taken out of SV.

Not really, but I had you scared there for a second, didn’t I?

Haha! You had me more thinking along the lines of, “What? How?!”

As I think Episode I could have been so much better, and overall sucked. (I’m one of those previous trilogy fanatics. Grew up on them from age 6). There not anything can be taken away from SV by comparing it to Episode I. I’d say Episode I would make an easy target for parodizing.

This was my favorite character. I hope the 3d model made it into the game.
